Shakespeare’s Midwinter Magic
It’s Thursday night and we’re just back from a truly spectacular after-dark experience at Shakespeare’s New Place. We went to the ‘Midwinter Magic: Dance-Circus Spectacular‘ and, as advertised, it was exactly that!
We started the evening in the best way possible: With the most delicious hot chocolates and mince pies.. ahh, yes!
Modern dance and contemporary music
The circus performance was set in the gardens at Shakespeare’s New Place with the lit trees and sculptures on one side and the house on the other creating the perfect backdrop.
The award-winning dance-circus company, Motionhouse, performed with absolutely everything they had, gliding through the contemporary gardens of Shakespeare’s New Place, exciting the audience with incredible acrobatic sequences, all inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest. This was immersive storytelling taken to a new level and we loved joining the performers on this magical adventure.
Through hyper modern dance sequences and contemporary music that could be heard throughout most of the town, I’m sure, they told tales of the timeless themes of Shakespeare. They invited us, the audience, to join them while they travelled through the gardens at Shakespeare’s New Place, the site of the playwright’s family home.
In a collaboration with Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, professional acrobats and dancers from one of this country’s leading dance theatre companies leaped, jumped, dangled and danced through the garden, performing a theatrical and wonderful performance… a wildly exciting event.
