Stratford-upon-Avon at Christmas Time
Christmas in Stratford-upon-Avon, what could be more wonderful? With so many super events and offers out there and with our lovely town all dressed up in the most festive fashion, we’re in for a Christmas treat this year for sure.
Here we’ve pulled together some lovely things to do and places to go in December and for Christmas in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Merry Christmas x
Celebrate the festive season with Shakespeare. The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has an exciting programme of festive fun at all the Family Homes.
Travel through time at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, create your own Shakespeare-inspired Christmas decorations at the New Place, there are Jacobean music performances, tours, festive performances, experiences and a Tudor Christmas. The festive season wouldn’t be festive without Father Christmas, and luckily for us all he will be at Hall’s Croft on various dates.
For Christmas, The Royal Shakespeare Company have out on a brand new adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, one of the most loved short stories ever written. In one ghostly Christmas night, cold-hearted businessman Ebenezer Scrooge learns to pity himself and to love his neighbour – but is that enough? It’s a festive tale of redemption and compassion at the RSC this Christmas.
Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall
Shakespeare’s Schoolroom & Guildhall celebrates a Traditional Tudor Christmas this December, by inviting visitors to immerse themselves in a world of yuletides past.
The 15th century building, located in the heart of Stratford upon Avon, will embrace its heritage with traditional decorations that reflect the kind of Christmas Shakespeare himself would have experienced as a young boy, during the time he was a pupil at the school.
Shopping and Christmas go hand in hand, of course, and there are so many places you can shop for Christmas, but no place in Stratford-upon-Avon combines the joys of Christmas shopping, cosy atmosphere and a nice hot drink, lunch or cake like Bonds Lifestyle.
A shopping destination like no other, full of beatiful antiques, country style brands and one-of-a-kind gems, you will find the perfect Christmas present here, whoever you’re shopping for.
The lovely restaurant at The Arden Hotel by the river, Waterside Brasserie, is the perfect setting for a Christmas lunch or dinner for two, with friends or with family, absolute perfection and complete with Champagne bar and fantastic views of the river and the RSC.
The Arden has a super December Dining Offer which includes artisan breads, a delicious 3-course menu, coffee and crackers. Lunch is £22.50 per person, dinner is £29.50.
The Nutcracker Christmas Shop
We’re lucky in Stratford-upon-Avon, we don’t have to wait until December to go shopping for Christmas ornaments, gifts and trinkets, we can do that all year round in The Nutcracker Christmas Shop, a truly wonderful shopping experience and aarguaby the mother of all Christmas shops.
The Christmas experience isn’t complete without a visit to this incredibly festive shop at least once… well, twice… or maybe three times.
No, no, you didn’t read this wrong, Christmas Ice Cream exists and it’s right here in Stratford-upon-Avon! At Hooray’s, of course, the sweetest place in town. Here the team are spreading the coolest of festive cheer every day up to Christmas in the form of ice creams in Christmassy flavours.
There is Christmas Pudding, Santa’s Grotto, Snow, Gingerbread Men, Christmas Tree and many, many more. And they’re DELICIOUS, so forget warming up in the cold for a bit and go be cool for Christmas instead.
It’s been said many times about the Father Christmas in Magic Alley in Stratford-upon-Avon that he is “the most authentic and traditional Father Christmas in the country”. Well, we can’t say for sure, of course, but we think he’s the real deal!
Father Christmas is in residence at Magic Alley until Christmas Eve where the experience of meeting the man himself has been made magical and memorable for grown ups as well as the little ones. spaces are limited, so be sure to book.
Aside from an absolutely delicious Christmas Menu, The Bell Alderminster will be joined by The Cotswold Choir on the 13th of December for a festive sing-a-long, mince pies and mulled wine.
It may be cold outside, but inside Stratford Butterfly Farm is always nice and toasty and they have some super offers and events going on for Christmas. On the 3rd of December you can join ‘Jasmin and the Community Harps’ and ‘Village Voices’ singing Christmas Carols as well as a craft session where children can make percussion instruments to accompany the harps and informal harp sessions for those of you that would like to have a go at playing the harp.
During the Christmas holidays, children and adults can discover some of the amazing creatures that live at the Butterfly Farm with the popular ‘Meet the Minibeast’ handling sessions. These will take place twice daily from 27 December to 7 January with the Education Team in the Discovery Zone. Visitors will be able to hold a variety of Stick Insects, African Land Snails, giant Millipedes and even Madagascan Cockroaches!
And don’t forget the nature inspired gift shop is the perfect place to find stocking-fillers for all the family! Stratford Butterfly Farm is open every day, except Christmas Day, 10am to 5:00pm, last entry 3.30pm.
We’re really not going to beat about the bush, Veeno at Bell Court in Stratford-upon-Avon is one of our all-time favourite places to go out. From the warm and cosy atmosphere and the super-friendly service to the unbelievaby delicious Italian food platters and the good drinks and wine, what’s not to love… and we’re reliably informed that all those things with an addition of festive spirit (and spirits, probably) will be available in the Christmas month also.
From now until the 30th of December, Veeno is offering guests a taste of “The Ultimate Italian Christmas Treat“ in the form of a sharing package at £25 per person. A choice of Prosecco or Aperol Spritz, accompanied with authentic Italian bread’s and juicy Ligurian olives to start. The King of sharing boards, the Italia platter with a half bottle of wine for mains and homemade tiramisu with a warm glass of mulled wine, tea or coffee to finish. Now that says Happy Christmas if ever anything did!
El Greco, winning at Christmas
It seems nobody was more excited about Christmas in Stratford-upon-Avon than our favourite Greek restaurant, El Greco. When the whole town was patiently waiting for the 23rd of November and the official Christmas lights switch on to get into the festive mood, not so at El Greco. Several days before anyone else, the Greek restaurant switched their lights on, and what a display it was, of fabulous flashing lights covering the entire restaurant. We loved it… well done El Greco for winning at Christmas, we say! El Greco has a super Christmas menu, check it out here.
We love a good afternoon tea, not least in December. One of our favourite places to go for Afternoon Tea in Stratford-upon-Avon is The Welcombe. And not just for the incredibly delicious scones, cakes and tea, because it’s so much more than that. The setting for the best afternoon teas must also include some or all of the following: A roaring fire, a comfy sofa or arm chair and a pretty view, and The Welcombe has that part down just right.
